Grape Agate (#1299)

This medium size Grape Agate specimen comes from Sulawesi, Indonesia, one of the few known sources for this distinctive formation. Grape Agate is not true agate but a botryoidal variety of chalcedony, recognized by its clusters of small, rounded nodules that resemble bunches of grapes. The lavender to purple coloring, caused by trace manganese, sets it apart from other chalcedony varieties.

Each cluster forms naturally over time as silica deposits build up in layers within volcanic rock cavities, creating the rounded, grape like texture collectors look for. This piece shows well defined botryoidal growth and consistent coloring throughout the formation.
